Carol Swain on Her Conversation with Bill Barr, Prohibited-Concepts Training for Tennessee School Board Members

Live from Music Row Thursday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed all-star panelist Carol M. Swain in studio to explain her chance encountewith former United States Attorney General Bill Barr and how her credit-approved company Real Unity Solutions educates school board members on the prohibited concepts law.

Leahy: We have a special treat for our listeners. It’s been a while since we’ve had our very good friend, all-star panelist Carol Swain, in the studio. Good morning, Carol.

Swain: Good morning, Michael, Clint, and the rest of the world.

Leahy: Yes, we are fortunate to have been able to have you in here. You are busier than you have ever been in your life. You’re traveling a lot. You’re a Senior Fellow for Constitutional Studies at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. I see you having conversations with political leaders all the time.

You met our very good friend in Arizona, Kari Lake, who’s running for governor. I saw the picture of the two of you, and I posted that up, and it had like, you know, thousands and thousands of likes. And then you also had a little conversation with former Attorney General Bill Barr.

Swain: You know, what’s very interesting is that I knew he was speaking the next day after I spoke at this conference. And so I was lying in bed thinking, I’d like to take him aside and ask him a couple of questions.

One is about the January 6th protesters that are in jail. Many of them have not had trials. And about the information that’s coming out about the elections. So I’m lying in bed thinking about that. I pressed the elevator button, and he’s on the elevator.

(Leahy chuckles) And so I didn’t approach him then. I spoke to him, but when he got off the elevator, I followed him off the elevator, and I approached him by saying pretty much – I don’t think he knows me.

I said, I’m a nobody, but I’m really concerned about all these issues. And he didn’t correct me that I was a nobody, but I started the conversation, and he was very polite until I mentioned the election.

And that’s when he kind of cut me off because he was headed to the room. So I understood, okay, he wants to focus on what he’s going to talk about. But then after the interview, there were things that I felt like, he’s not getting away without my questions being answered.

And so I went to him again and implored him. I told him, I really needed to talk with him. I folded my hands and looked him in the eye. And so we had a longer conversation.

But at the end of the day, he did say that he had been trying to work on behalf of the January 6th protesters and that he talks about it all the time. And I’ve never heard him speak [on that subject].

Leahy: I’ve never heard a word from him.

Swain: And then when it came to the election, he just really dug in. And my sense is, he made a decision early on before there was any evidence, and that pride would prevent him and a lot of people from backing away with, I made a mistake.

But we did agree that there’s no way you can get evidence about an election in two or three weeks, or six weeks. It takes months, it takes years to investigate. And so that was that encounter.

Leahy: Wow. Well, that’s interesting. And so he kind of was, abrupt, shall we say, when you got to the real core of the issue.

Swain: Well, when I brought up the election because I wanted him to revisit the new evidence that’s coming out of the irregularities and where they took place. But I got my opportunity, I seized my opportunity, and that’s what I do.

Leahy: Well, yes. And speaking of seizing opportunities, you’ve got a new company called Unity Training. Do I have that right?

Swain: It’s Real Unity Training Solutions.

Leahy: Real Unity Training Solutions. And you’re going to be doing something I think that’s quite good, starting on November 1st. Tell us the background of the new state law that’s coming into effect and what kind of training you’re going to be doing.

Swain: There is a state law that now allows more than the Tennessee School Board Association to provide training for new school board members.

And they had an application process, and so we had to go through like four or five rounds of applications. And we have developed a seven-credit course about the prohibited concepts law.

Leahy: This was passed into law and signed into law, what, earlier this year. Is that right, or when was it – 2021? Recently?

Swain: The law that allows other companies to provide the training is a more recent law.

Leahy: That’s the most recent one.

Swain: And so we were approved during the spring, and so we had developed a course. It’s going to be taught by three people on November 1st. But right now we’re taking registrations.

And it’s something that if there are school board members that would like to take it or newly elected school board members, it’s really designed for them to understand the prohibited concepts law and the different aspects of it. Registration is taking place now if they go to my website, the Unity Training website.

Leahy: And what is that website?

Swain: Unitytrainingsolutions.com.

Leahy: Unity Training Solutions dot-com. If you’re a new school board member, you can go. And this is an approved training process, right?

Swain: Yes, a one-day course, seven credits that is going to be held in Brentwood, and anyone from any part of the state can take the course.

Leahy: I think this would be very interesting. What kind of response have you gotten so far? Unity Training Solutions dot-com.

Swain: But then if you go if you scroll down on that page, you can see the registration link.

Leahy: I’m looking at it.

Swain: And we had a goal of the number of people that we wanted for the class. And so we still have openings. It’s difficult to get the information to the school board members. And it’s not just the newly elected school board members – existing school board members can take it.

The school system has money allocated for this kind of training, so they need to go through the school board secretaries and we can take purchase orders as well as other forms of payment.

Leahy: So I noticed you say it’s Carol Swain’s Real Unity Training Solution. You got a little branding going on there.

Swain: That happened because there were so many people doing work that wasn’t unity training, and they were all calling it unity training.

And so I felt that it was important for me to distinguish my company from companies that are calling themselves unity training when they’re doing the opposite.

Leahy: That’s very good. Who will be the people delivering this training?

Swain: Well, it will be me, Dr. Michelle Hooper, and an attorney in town, Zale Dowlen. And then we have interviews with people like Larry Crane, and some parents that are part of our training, so that people can understand more about [how] the law has been applied in other places, what the intentions were when it was passed, and when they complete the course, they should be able to just thoroughly understand the environment. And it’s not just CRT. We’re talking about prohibited concepts that involve other challenges that are facing the school systems at this time.
